I am a member of Cottonwood Toastmasters and our Table Topics theme for today was "Fresh Starts". I was impressed with the participants responses which have inspired this days blog post. Most of the questions had to do with goals or resolutions for the new year, and most of the participants said they don't set new years resolutions, they live for the moment. I too have discovered that living in the moment, enjoying the Present Time, is the best way for me to live and I have found much joy and happiness in this pursuit. Living in Present Time is something I choose to stay consciously aware of. This doesn't mean I don't have goals and desires, I do. However, I am aware of them yet choose to live in the moment and witness how these desires manifest in my life.
One of the things that I choose to experience in Present Time is to be an objective observer of my daily experiences. I had an experience today that would normally get me all UPSET and flustered, maybe even tearful. As I began the journey down this familiar road, I thought to myself "Laina, what are you doing? Instead of getting upset over this experience, observe the experience. See what happens when you observe your thoughts." So, this is what I did. I asked myself "What kind of experience was this?" In answer to my internal question, I came up with some interesting answers. "It was unexpected. The experience felt uncomfortable, I was confused, and I felt deceived with feelings of betrayal, and dissatisfaction." Then I said to myself "Wow, so that's what those experiences feel like!" What a release of emotion that was for me. Just observing assisted me in releasing the emotions that come from uncomfortable, unexpected situations.
My next question was "What can you do about it?" After asking myself this question,I realized I was not locked into any specific thought, emotion or commitment. I began a search for a solution to the event that brought about this uncomfortable experience, which may prove to bring about a better situation for my path. A course change so to speak. Without observing this experience and just getting all upset over it, I may have stayed on a course not necessary to my life journey. It will be an interesting experience to see what happens next. I believe we are in existence here to experience life, emotions, situations. I believe all these experiences are for our good.
